Arriving as a beacon of positivity during a time of global uncertainty, IN THE MOMENT stands as Rebelution's most deliberate and sonically adventurous work to date. Recorded remotely in the midst of the pandemic, the album forced the band to completely reimagine their creative process; with members scattered across Southern California, touring guitarist Kyle Ahern stepped into the role of producer, acting as the "hub" to the band's "spokes." This unique, layer-by-layer approach allowed the group to obsess over every detail, crafting an immersive sonic universe washed in swirling reverb and trippy delays that feels simultaneously futuristic and vintage.
The result is a record that fearlessly expands the Rebelution palette. While tracks like the buoyant opener “Satisfied” and the nostalgic "Old School Feeling" deliver the signature reggae-rock grooves fans crave, the album quickly ventures into uncharted territory. “Heavy as Lead” fuses hip-hop grit with heavy roots rhythms, while the soulful "That Zone" features American soul singer Durand Jones, injecting a 70s R&B flavor into the mix. The guest list further highlights this diversity, enlisting Jamaican heavyweights Kabaka Pyramid, Keznamdi, and Busy Signal to bring a harder, dancehall-inflected edge to the project's B-side.
Beneath the lush production, IN THE MOMENT is a profound meditation on the passage of time. Frontman Eric Rachmany's lyrics drift between the joy of the present and the wistfulness of the past, culminating in the acoustic closer "To Be Younger," which leaves the listener with a raw, stripped-back reminder to cherish the now.
