30 Years of
Easy Star Records
Creating a global family through the love of reggae since 1996.
About Easy Star Records
As a global leader in the progressive reggae movement, Easy Star Records remains one of the most pertinent independent labels in the game. Staying true to our roots, Easy Star has kept the concept of a record label relevant by creating a hub where fans and artists alike can come to trust and rely on consistency and quality. With a close-knit but musically diverse roster of artists hailing across the globe from Jamaica, England, New Zealand, France, Hawaii, and all corners of the continental U.S., the Easy Star family has redefined the genre itself, pushing reggae to new levels of fandom. Easy Star Records has held over a dozen #1 records on the Billboard reggae chart in its history, in addition to multiple Top 200 releases in both the U.S. and the U.K.
The label's earliest seven-inch singles featured music produced by label co-founder Michael Goldwasser and performed by a nascent version of Easy Star All-Stars – essentially a house band filled with friends and colleagues from the New York area. These singles featured vocals by young singers like Rob Symeonn, Ossie Dellimore, Ruff Scott, and Father Sweets. In 1997, these were compiled, along with a number of new songs, on to the label's first full-length release, EASY STAR VOLUME ONE. Following this, Easy Star's next wave of releases featured many in-house productions, as well as reissues and new albums featuring reggae legends Sugar Minott, The Meditations, Sister Carol, Tristan Palma, and producer Linval Thompson.
Conscientiousness and professionalism are at the heart of the Easy Star brand. Our strong reputation was built on the commitment and dedication we have to our artists, fans, and from the way we treat our artists and partners alike. Easy Star Records is a place where bands can realize their specific artistic visions, expand their audiences, and grow in their careers. As Reggae Grooves tells it, this made Easy Star Records a label that never stops "throwing masterpieces at you!"
Key Milestones
The Genesis
Easy Star Records was established in New York City by a collective of four friends: Michael Goldwasser, Eric Smith, Lem Oppenheimer, and Remy Gerstein. The label's earliest seven-inch singles featured music produced by Goldwasser and performed by a nascent version of Easy Star All-Stars, with vocals by Rob Symeonn, Ossie Dellimore, Ruff Scott, and Father Sweets.
The Tribute Series
The label released the worldwide hit tribute album Dub Side Of The Moon by Easy Star All-Stars. This album went on to become one of the defining records of 21st century reggae, spending over 7 years straight on the Billboard charts. It was followed by Radiodread (2006), Easy Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band (2009), Easy Star's Thrillah (2012), and Ziggy Stardub (2023). The band has played on six continents in over thirty countries.
JBB, Ticklah & Tommy T
The tribute albums were followed by influential albums by John Brown's Body and cult favorites Ticklah and Tommy T. The partnership with John Brown's Body was especially notable as the band has released seven albums and a handful of singles with Easy Star starting in 2005. Ticklah's album TICKLAH VS. AXELROD featured the track "Nine Years," which was used in a pivotal scene in the second episode of Breaking Bad.
Pioneering U.S. Reggae
Easy Star embraced – and helped foster – the growing U.S. reggae scene, working with trailblazers like Rebelution, The Green, Passafire, Cas Haley, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, New Kingston, The Late Ones, HIRIE, and The Expanders. In recent years, Easy Star has nurtured another generation including Flying Vipers, Double Tiger, The Loving Paupers, The Autos, SunDub, and JonQuan.
Global Expansion & GRAMMYs
Easy Star kept working with the new stars of reggae from Jamaica — Protoje, Jesse Royal, Lila Iké, Mortimer, Samory I, and Naomi Cowan — while expanding internationally with The Black Seeds, The Skints, Bedouin Soundclash, Marcus Gad & Tribe, and Gentleman's Dub Club. Easy Star has been rewarded with five GRAMMY nominations for Reggae Album of the Year.
Juno Award Winner
Naomi Cowan takes home a historic Juno Award, a testament to her incredible talent and our growing international impact.
