JonQuan

Armed with a formidable collection of vintage gear, Virginia's JonQuan isn't just a student of reggae's golden era—he is actively rebuilding it. Zeroing in on the raw, transitional "rub-a-dub" sound of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, the producer and keyboardist crafts strictly-hardware instrumentals that are tactile and heavy. His productions summon the unmistakable low-end grit and analog warmth that once saturated the mixing boards at legendary institutions like Channel One and King Tubby’s. That militant dedication to the roots aligns directly with Easy Star Records, who released his 2022 debut, Easy Star Presents: JonQuan & Associates. Mixed by dub specialist Victor Rice, the album is a heavy, no-nonsense roots record. JonQuan’s analog instrumentals back a lineup of veteran Jamaican vocalists, including Linval Thompson and Carlton Livingston. The result is a project that sounds less like a modern homage and more like a lost master tape unearthed from a 1981 Kingston vault. Today, JonQuan operates as a direct link between reggae’s past and its present. Whether he’s dropping standalone singles, heavy dub mixes, or collaborative sets, his approach remains singular. By keeping his hands strictly on vintage circuitry and tape delays, JonQuan proves that classic rub-a-dub isn't just a nostalgic relic—it’s a living, breathing sound ready for a new generation
