Dub Architect

Operating at the intersection of traditional Jamaican sound system culture and modern digital production, Justin Pietro—better known to the reggae world as Dub Architect—is a sonic visionary who originally treated the mixing console as his primary instrument. Drawing heavy inspiration from the scientific mixing approaches of pioneers like King Tubby and Scientist, as well as the psychedelic fusions of Mad Professor, Dub Architect approached each track as a literal blueprint. His signature sound relied on a deep, structural foundation of massive analog sub-bass and heavy, precision-driven drum patterns. By meticulously applying layers of delay, reverb, and spatial filtering, he constructed sprawling, atmospheric "rooms" within the music, allowing vocalists and rhythm sections to echo through expansive, newly built sonic landscapes.

Before stepping into the broader consciousness of the international reggae scene, Pietro honed his DIY production chops and live dub mixing skills as the lead guitarist and in-house dub specialist for the reggae quartet Dub Campaign. Tracking and mixing their music entirely in a home studio, this independent, grassroots environment was crucial to Dub Architect's evolution; it gave him the freedom to experiment with screeching guitar solos, deep spatial breakdowns, and live-dub effects, solidifying his belief that post-production and effect manipulation are just as vital to a song's artistic identity as the initial recording itself.

Dub Architect’s technical prowess eventually caught the ear of major players in the contemporary reggae scene, leading to fruitful collaborations within the Easy Star Records family. He notably contributed to Rebelution's acclaimed catalog, bringing his signature touch to their Count Me In Remix EP. One of his standout technical achievements is his sprawling remix of "Roots Reggae Music," a massive collaboration featuring Don Carlos and Katchafire. Stripping down tracks originally touched by legendary, Grammy-winning engineer Errol Brown, Dub Architect proved his ability to respect the roots foundation of a song while mutating its DNA into something entirely fresh. He also became a trusted ear for label curation, officially mixing the Easy Star Records - Winter Mix 2014, seamlessly blending the label’s roster into a continuous, dub-heavy journey.

Today, Pietro's architectural mindset has simply expanded beyond the mixing board and into new mediums. Taking the exact same meticulous, structural approach he once applied to audio consoles, he founded Soundwave Consulting, dedicating the last decade to building out the backend of the music industry itself. As President of Soundwave, he operates behind the scenes as a vital industry force—designing the platforms, digital strategies, and web experiences (including the very Easy Star Records digital ecosystem) that empower artists and labels to effectively share their sound with the world.
