The Big Smoke

THE BIG SMOKE marks a pivotal moment in the history of Gentleman's Dub Club as their second full-length album and their debut release with Easy Star Records. Capturing the frenetic energy and soul of the band's relocation from their birthplace in Leeds to London (affectionately known as "THE BIG SMOKE"), the record is a masterclass in modern UK reggae.

While the nine-piece outfit built their reputation on high-octane live performances and bass-heavy anthems, THE BIG SMOKE sees them evolving into more mature, classic songwriting territory without losing their signature sound system dynamics. The album seamlessly blends future roots, ska, and dub, creating a listening experience that is as powerful through headphones as it is on a festival stage.

From the infectious opening hook of "Music Is The Girl I Love" to the vocal-driven closer "See Them," the album showcases the Gents' ability to fuse smooth, sunny vibes with gritty, urban undertones. The record also features standout collaborations, including the soulful "One Night Only" featuring UK reggae star Natty and the jazz-inflected "Nocturnal" with tenor saxophonist Josh Arcoleo.

Praised by Rootfire as a "timely progression for reggae's melodic subgenre," THE BIG SMOKE cemented Gentleman's Dub Club as a major force in the international reggae scene and remains an essential listen for fans of the Easy Star sound.
