When we officially welcomed Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad to the Easy Star Records family, we knew we were capturing a band at a pivotal creative peak. The Rochester, New York collective had already built a fierce reputation on the jam circuit for their boundary-pushing, highly improvisational live shows. But with their September 2014 label debut, Steady, they managed the difficult task of channeling that kinetic stage energy into a laser-focused studio record. The album served as a perfect introduction to their place on our roster, effortlessly bridging the gap between their road-warrior ethos and a deep, abiding respect for traditional roots reggae.
The sonic architecture of Steady is a testament to the collaborative, all-hands-on-deck approach the band took in the studio. The heavy lifting happened during their 2013 sessions alongside co-producer Craig Welsch of 10 Ft. Ganja Plant, who helped the band dial in a thick, authentic, and uncompromising roots tone. But the magic of this record also lies in its strategic, late-game additions. To capture the lightning-in-a-bottle feel of their live-show staple "Mr. Cop," the squad tapped Matt Saccuccimorano of John Brown’s Body. Later, they brought in Danny Kalb—known for his stellar work with Ben Harper and The Green—to co-produce the title track, adding the final, crucial polish to the album's sequence.
Listening back to the tracklist, Steady feels like a masterclass in modern American roots music. From the propulsive groove of the opener "Whatever Cost" to the heavy-hitting soundclash energy of "Take Your Place" featuring legendary Jamaican deejay Ranking Joe, the record perfectly balances classic dub sensibilities with the band's signature Northeastern psychedelic edge. The reggae community clearly felt that resonance, too. Steady debuted at #1 on the Billboard Reggae Chart—a massive milestone that not only validated the band's restless innovation but firmly cemented a cornerstone of the Easy Star catalog.
