Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band Easy Star All-Stars
Released in 2009, Easy Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band marked the third full-length tribute from the Easy Star All-Stars, following their successful reinterpretations of Pink Floyd and Radiohead. While those earlier projects relied heavily on dark, atmospheric textures, this reimagining of The Beatles' 1967 masterpiece required a shift toward psychedelic playfulness. Producer Michael Goldwasser took on the task of translating some of the most complex arrangements in pop history into the language of roots reggae and dub, ensuring that the "Summer of Love" energy remained intact while anchoring it with heavy, one-drop rhythms.
The album serves as a massive showcase for the Easy Star Records roster and its extended family of reggae legends. Guest appearances are curated to match the specific "characters" of the original songs. Luciano brings a spiritual gravity to "With a Little Help From My Friends," while the late Frankie Paul offers a soulful, hazy take on "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds." These veteran voices are balanced by the All-Stars' own Kirsty Rock, whose performance on "She's Leaving Home" provides one of the record's more grounded, emotional moments.
Musically, the project highlights the label's commitment to "ultra-detailed" production. Tracks like "Within You Without You" featuring Matisyahu lean into the Indo-reggae fusion that George Harrison originally explored with sitars, replaced here by echoing percussion and deep bass grooves. The All-Stars also lean into the "band within a band" concept, utilizing the vocal talents of Ranking Roger and Steel Pulse to maintain the theatricality of the original LP. It's a technical feat that managed to top the Billboard Reggae Chart upon release, proving the All-Stars could handle the Fab Four's legacy with precision.
Within the broader Easy Star catalog, Lonely Hearts Dub Band acts as a bridge between the spacey dub of Dub Side of the Moon and the later, more pop-centric explorations found on Ziggy Stardust or Ziggy Stardub. It remains a critical piece of the label's history, demonstrating how a classic concept album can be completely dismantled and rebuilt without losing its soul. For fans of the All-Stars' collaborative spirit, it stands as a dense, rewarding listen that rewards repeat plays—much like the 1967 original that inspired it.
