Careful Mortimer

When we partnered with producer Winta James and Overstand Entertainment to release “Careful” in October 2018, we knew Jamaican powerhouse Mortimer had delivered something entirely uncompromising. Stepping away from traditional, sun-soaked lovers rock, Mortimer instead plunged into a darker, more aggressive sonic territory. The track was brought to life at the legendary Tuff Gong Studios, where Winta engineered a relentlessly heavy foundation of militant drum and bass layered beneath fuzzy, distorted guitars. This provided the perfect atmospheric bedrock for Mortimer's sobering, deeply evocative lyrics. Written as a stark cautionary tale about the painful realities of trust and betrayal among family and friends, his vocal performance cuts straight through the mix, balancing raw frustration with a haunting vulnerability that instantly set him apart in the modern reggae landscape.

The visceral energy of the record translated seamlessly onto the screen with the release of the track's official music video. Rather than relying on standard genre tropes, the cinematic visual captured the gritty, emotional friction of the song, striking a massive chord with a global audience. The video quickly became a viral milestone, racking up millions of insane views and acting as an undeniable launchpad for his breakout Fight The Fight EP.
