January 20, 2015REBELUTION'S COUNT ME IN REMIX EP OUT NOW
"Rebelution had a milestone year in 2014 with the release of their fourth studio album, Count Me In, which was the #1 selling album for the year on the Billboard Reggae chart, and their first co-released with Easy Star Records. 2015 kick starts right where they left off, with the announcement of their Count Me In Remix EP featuring Iration, The Green, J Boog, Katchafire, Dub Architect, Michael Goldwasser, Marshall "Ras MG" Goodman and Yeti Beats, available on January 20th.
The Remix EP features 5 tracks, with all proceeds being donated to WeCareSolar, Lupus Foundation of America, Jacob's Heart Children's Cancer Support and the SurfRider Foundation. Adding to the album version which features a collaboration with Jamaican Reggae legend and Rebelution-influencer Don Carlos, "Roots Reggae Music" gets a super dub treatment courtesy of Dub Architect and an extra verse from tour mates Katchafire. "Hate To Be The One" is reimagined by Easy Star Records' in-house superproducer Michael Goldwasser, and Sublime collaborator Marshall "Ras MG" Goodman offers up remixes of album favorites "Count Me In" and "De-Stress." Yeti Beats adds some more bounce to the anti-materialism anthem "More Love," featuring frequent collaborators and tour mates Iration, J Boog and Easy Star label mates The Green.
The "Winter Greens Tour" promises to deliver a nice balance of classic Rebelution tracks alongside new favorites, supported by other leading roots bands including Katchafire from New Zealand, Gondwana from Chile, and Jeremy Loops from South Africa to round out the 30+ date run. Lastly, the band will be touring worldwide throughout the year with performances in Australia, the Philippines and Europe, with more to be announced. " More info »
January 12, 2015THE SKINTS SIGN TO EASY STAR
"Reggae-dub four-piece The Skints, described by Clash Music as "the torchbearers for modern British reggae music," are pleased to announce their signing to prestigious New York City-based reggae label Easy Star Records.
Easy Star has steadily built a scene that extends in many directions, bringing together young producers, up-and-coming bands, reggae stars, and even artists outside the genre who have been influenced by Jamaican music, like Citizen Cope and blues musicologist Corey Harris. The independent label has created an impressive body of work that includes best-selling in-house productions from musical collective Easy Star All-Stars, along with progressive recordings, reissues of classic reggae, and collaborations with international reggae stars like Matisyahu, Luciano, Horace Andy and Morgan Heritage. The international progressive reggae scene that Easy Star has built continues to grow, thanks to label bands such as Rebelution, The Green, The Black Seeds, John Brown's Body, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Passafire, and Cas Haley.
This year sees them make a proud addition to their roster in the form of The Skints, in a partnership that promises to further strengthen the reggae scene. The East London-based group, who mix Jamaican styles with pop hooks, grimey raps, filthy basslines and a punk-rock work ethic, released their first album, Live, Breathe, Build, Believe in 2010. Crossing the boundaries between the punk scene they grew up in and the reggae grooves they love, it proved to be a popular underground hit, and was followed in 2013 by their entirely crowdfunded sophomore LP Part and Parcel, produced by close friend and renowned producer Prince Fatty (Lily Allen, Hollie Cook).
Having whetted our appetites with the interim Short Change EP in 2014, which was released through their own imprint Penny Drop Recordings, The Skints have since been in the studio recording their highly anticipated third full-length. Now, following their new alliance with Easy Star, they are preparing for its release on 9th March in UK and 10th March in US (presale begins 2nd February, 2015 in UK and 3rd February in US).
The album sees Prince Fatty back in the producer's chair adding his signature take on the genre, and will feature a host of exciting guests including reggae legends Tippa Irie and Horseman, alongside grime MC Rival, with full details to be announced in the coming weeks.
Having finished 2014 in style, taking to the road on the Jägermeister Music Tour alongside Me First and The Gimme Gimmes and performing at London's historic Brixton Academy in the process, 2015 promises to be another heavy year for the four-piece. With a number of UK tour dates already confirmed for April, along with European and stateside plans coming to fruition, the wheels are well and truly in motion - and The Skints show no signs of slowing down. November 19, 2014NEW KINGSTON SIGNS TO EASY STAR RECORDS
"New Kingston, a fast-rising, New York City-based reggae band, is preparing to release its third full-length album, KINGSTON CITY, on Easy Star Records. The record, which will come out January 27, 2015, includes 12 songs and guest appearances by members of Tribal Seeds, Hawaiian singer-songwriter Kimie Miner, Sister Carol, The Wailing Souls, and the late, great reggae legend Sugar Minott.
For New Kingston, having the new record come out on the buzziest reggae label in the world is a big step forward, following two self-released albums, and years of extensive touring, playing with acts like Collie Buddz, The Green, Easy Star All-Stars, Beres Hammond, and many more. The band is a true family affair, featuring three brothers (Stephen, Courtney Jr., and Tahir), who all sing and play instruments, joined by their father, Courtney Sr., who plays bass. With their Jamaican roots, reggae is in the band’s blood, but having grown up in the musical melting pot of New York City, the three brothers bring in plenty of other influences as well. The band also saw firsthand as the U.S. reggae scene boomed and embraced many of the techniques – from relentless touring to social networking – that helped shape the careers of the biggest bands in the evolving genre.
For Easy Star Records, having New Kingston on the roster is a return to its roots for the nearly 18-year old label. This is the first New York City-based act on the label since early signees Ticklah and Easy Star All-Stars. Label co-founder Michael Goldwasser used to gig with Courtney Sr. back when the rest of New Kingston was still learning to play their instruments. Sister Carol and Sugar Minott both were on several of Easy Star’s initial releases, including their very first one.
“New Kingston definitely stands out in the current scene,” says Easy Star CEO Eric Smith. “Their show is dynamic and exciting, they are one of the hardest working bands we have ever met, and every other artist we talk to has nothing but positive things to say about them. Musically, we feel they bring something different to the label, something that feels current, and at the same, brings us back to our earliest days of releasing reggae in New York.”
A pre-order for the record will go live in December, along with some sneak listens of tracks from the record. In the meantime, New Kingston is touring out west until Thanksgiving. " More info »
October 22, 2014CAS HALEY ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM CAMPAIGN
"Easy Star artist Cas Haley has recently announced that he is running a campaign through PledgeMusic to record his upcoming album. He sent an e-mail earlier updating fans with his current status and future plans for his music and family, which you can read here:
As many of you may know, I recently went through a scare with my voice, and the result was that I had to go on vocal rest, cancel two tours, and spend a few months retraining myself to sing in a new way. It was a pretty scary period for me, but it gave me a lot of time home with family, time to reflect on my career, and time to work on new music. I came out of this period with a new mantra: More Music, More Family and am now preparing to record a new album! I'm partnering with PledgeMusic in order to bring you into the album making experience. When you pledge, not only will you be receiving a download of the album and have access to great exclusive items/experiences, but you'll also be receiving special updates from me throughout the process. I'm also putting some of the money towards the charity run by my friends in Wookiefoot, Be The Change Charities, as well. I'm so excited for this experience and hope that you will help me make this possible!
